Lanzarote – Not Just A Winter Sun Destination
The ongoing effects of the financial crisis have led many people to consider staying at home over the summer holiday period. But all too often the best laid plans can go awry thanks to the unpredictable nature of British weather.
As a result, Lanzarote can expect a good quantity of last minute bookings for the summer period. The Canarian island is already well established as a reliable winter sun destination, but it also makes a great destination in July and August.
Whilst the weather is hot during the summer, it is not as oppressively heavy as it can be in mainland Europe, due to the cool breezes that come off the Atlantic. And with nearly ninety beaches, the island is perfect for families and beach lovers alike.
These days there is an extensive range of accommodation available across the island, with everything from cheap apartments to five star hotels covering every conceivable budget. Increasingly, however, many opt to stay in Lanzarote villas as this option gives the greatest independence and privacy.
With the vast majority of villas offering a private swimming pool and outdoor space, they combine the comforts of staying in an environment similar to home with the best aspects of Lanzarote´s unique history. Which include incredible volcanic landscapes, a traditional rural interior and relatively unspoiled tourist resorts.
To get the very best out of a stay on the island, car hire in Lanzarote provides the easiest means of getting around and is extremely reasonable in terms of cost as well. And with its plentiful beaches, unusual countryside and several one-off tourist attractions, there is a lot to get out and see.
The most frequently visited of the island´s attractions is the volcano park known as Timanfaya. It is here that you can get a proper insight into the devastating impact the eruptions of 1730 to 1736 had on the lives of locals and the landscape.
The eerie atmosphere that still emanates from the vast lava fields and burnt looking craters is extremely beautiful in its own way. And acts as a total contrast to the northern half of the island, where volcanic activity was more sporadic and happened much further in the past.
Several of the other main attractions are also located in the northern half of the island, such as the indescribable Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Rio, which works as a lookout post over the neighbouring island of La Graciosa.
